Set sail on a voyage with the legendary explorer Admiral Zheng He
Zheng He was one of the highest ranking members of the Chinese military during the early years of the Ming dynasty, and his deeds and accomplishments have been well documented in Chinese history.
Despite this, it’s extremely likely that most players of this game will never have heard of Mr Zheng before. What better way to introduce this legendary Chinese explorer, diplomat and Admiral to a Western audience than by giving him his own high paying slot machine?
This is a fairly typical game in many ways, utilising a four-row, five reel layout with 88 pay lines. There are four bonus modes, which are user selectable whenever the scatter symbols appear on reels two, three and four.
Most of the big hits are in the free spins feature where each spin can benefit from a multiplier of up to 8x, but it’s certainly possible to win big in the base game of this slot as well.
What We Love
Stacked wilds appear on all five reels, and seem to land on screen very often. A full line of five of a kind wilds pays out 10x your stake, whereas a full screen will pay the same on all 88 pay lines for a total of 880x your total bet.
Things get really exciting during the feature, where the maximum 8x multiplier increases the possible jackpot all the way to an eye-watering 7040x your stake.
There aren’t that many slots which can produce wins on this scale, and those that can are always popular – think NetEnt’s Dead or Alive, Microgaming’s Immortal Romance or Playtech’s Great Blue. Slots players love the chance at a huge win from a small stake, and that’s exactly what you get here with 1421 Voyages of Zheng He.
What We Do Not Like
The reel animations in this game are very choppy by modern standards, which does make the game feel a little dated in the presentation department. The graphics too are quite low quality and lack the high resolution that is becoming commonplace in new games from the likes of Microgaming and NetEnt.
Likewise, the music and sound effects sound extremely compressed. As with so many slots, the music does become extremely repetitive very quickly and so you will probably want to disable the audio fairly soon after starting to play.
It does feel as if the bonus mode can be very difficult to trigger, possibly because the scatter symbols only appear on three of the five reels. It’s disappointing that the scatter symbols have no pay out of their own too.
The “Cup Game” bonus seems an odd addition to this machine, as it’s difficult to imagine many players choosing a (supposed) one in three chance at a prize of 100x their stake over a free spins feature.
I tried the cup game seven times whilst writing my review of this game and didn’t manage to pick the winning cup even once, whereas I won at least 50x my stake from every one of my free spin features.
Absolutely! 1421 Voyages of Zheng He is a great new high variance game, and the paytable seems relatively generous considering the large number of paylines too.
I often try new slots in free play mode before depositing to play for real money, but this is definitely one game I wish I had played with real funds right away as I would have made a generous profit from my first fifty spins alone!
Some other recent IGT slots have been pretty forgettable, but Voyages of Zheng He is sure to excite online gamers and represents a great return to form for this developer.
