Brighten up your Autumn with big wins from Autumn Queen
Novomatic games aren’t well known for their presentation – the graphics in Autumn Queen are relatively basic and the sound effects are the same basic beeps and bleeps used in all of their games.
Where Novomatic usually succeeds though is with their payouts and bonus rounds, and Autumn Queen has a lot to offer in those departments. This is a very straightforward machine in many ways, with a typical five reel, four-row layout, and forty fixed pay lines on which to place your bets.
What We Love
Without a doubt, Autumn Queen is all about the bonus mode! To trigger it, you’ll need to hit at least one scatter on each of the game’s five reels. Unusually, the scatter symbols are stacked and for every additional one that lands onscreen above the minimum of five, you are rewarded with an extra five free spins.
Should you manage to fill the screen with scatter symbols you will start your feature with a massive eighty free spins, and you can even retrigger more during the bonus itself!
The minimum number of free spins that can be awarded is five, but the stacked scatters make it very likely you will start with at least fifteen or twenty free spins every time you enter this bonus mode, and like most Novomatic slots, retriggers seem particularly common – much more so than in Microgaming or NetEnt slots.
The free spins have an additional “Mystery Symbol” feature too. These mystery symbols are represented as autumn leaves, and at the end of each game round they will all be converted into matching symbols – anything from the low paying royals right the way up to the top paying picture symbols or even the scatters!
It’s possible to win on a very large number of pay lines simultaneously in this feature, or even fill the whole screen with a single symbol. This is a very high variance bonus round that could easily pay out a couple of thousand times your stake on a lucky run.
What We Do Not Like
The maximum win from a single spin is quite low at 500x your stake, and you can only achieve that during the free spins bonus as well. The base game itself doesn’t pay out very well, so if you don’t manage to hit the feature regularly your balance will fall very quickly.
It’s a shame that the scatter and wild symbols have no paytable allocation of their own too – getting a full screen of scatters is such a rare event that it feels quite unfair you don’t receive a payoff of some kind for landing it! That said, you do receive eighty free spins and it would be extremely unusual not to end up with a reasonably sized win from such a long bonus round.
As with all Novomatic games the presentation could do with a little polish too, particularly in the sound department – whilst those “old school” slot machine sounds will no doubt give a feeling of nostalgia to some players there are likely just as many who will find these sounds laughable, particularly when compared to the high-quality soundtracks offered by some modern Microgaming and NetEnt machines.
Novomatic slots are quite unlike those from other developers, and may not be to everybody’s taste. Those that enjoy their games seem to have a great deal of passion for them though, and a common sentiment mentioned whenever Novomatic is discussed is that their games seem to give players much more playtime for their money than other slots.
That makes a lot of sense when you consider that a big bonus round in Autumn Queen can go on for perhaps 150 free spins! Autumn Queen is a great fun slot that is definitely worth playing, even if you aren’t usually into Novomatic games – this is a nice game to get a feel for the way they like to do things.
Just one caveat, you may need to stray outside of your usual casinos to find this game for real money play as Novomatic slots are still quite uncommon at the moment.
